If the price moves down, a trader may decide to sell short so they can profit when it falls. The value of shares and ETFs bought through a share dealing account can fall as well as rise, which could mean getting back less than you originally put in. CFDs can therefore be used to hedge against existing portfolio holdings. For instance, if you hold a portfolio of shares in a particular sector but expect it to experience a short, sharp dip, you can use CFDs to short-sell your existing shares, hedging against this possibility.
